Vitamin E belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. It is a powerful antioxidant and works together with other antioxidants to strengthen the overall antioxidant defense.
Vitamin E consists of the tocopherols (d-alpha, d-gamma, d-beta and d-delta) which all work together to fight the free radicals. In natural food sources, vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol – found in a mixture of tocopherols) works together to neutralize the free radicals. Vitamin E helps protect cells from oxidative stress.
Vitamin E consists of two main groups: Tocopherols and Tocotrienols, each of which exists in four versions – Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. There are thus eight types of vitamin E. Natural vitamin E has the prefix D – e.g. D-alpha-tocopherol. Vitamin E is found naturally in cold-pressed vegetable oils, whole grains, dark vegetables, avocados, nuts, seeds, eggs, liver and other intestines, and milk. Products with synthetic vitamin E are characterized by having the prefix DL, for example. DL-alpha-tocopherol. In addition, synthetic vitamin E has less effect and all DL forms of vitamin E should be avoided.
